“As a virologist who has worked with multiple viral pathogens, I have a real appreciation of the danger posed by our foe.
“We need to take the COVID-19 pandemic seriously as a health crisis. The U.S. has a third of the world’s caseload and about one-quarter of the deaths.
“Our current scientific mobilization to address COVID-19 is unprecedented. We are using our experience in dealing with other life-threatening viruses to develop a treatment for the virus. For example, what we learned from HIV now forms a strong foundation to develop drugs, antibodies, and vaccines against COVID-19.
“We should also see the virus for what it is. Pathogens could emerge from anywhere on the globe. Ebola and HIV were transmitted to humans from animal species in Africa; the 2009 influenza pandemic surfaced in the U.S. in pigs.”
“I have faith that science will deliver solutions to end this pandemic. However, this will take some time and every citizen ought to play their part to buy time for the scientists.”
